Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt (Add-On)

This pre-Palooza training provides an opportunity to get up to speed on the Lean Six Sigma process improvement methodology before the big Process Palooza event!

Description:

This high-energy, interactive training uses a hands-on group experiential learning simulation to explore process improvement tools—including the DMAIC model (Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control), value stream mapping, Lean 5S, data analysis tools, and process sigma—to apply the concepts of Lean Six Sigma in real-time.

Upon completion of the course, participants are Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt practitioners prepared to share and apply tools and skills to bring efficiencies to their workplace.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Common language of process improvement and Lean Six Sigma
  • Tools of process improvement and how to apply them in any setting
  • Ability to identify “Non-Value Added” activities and "Waste" in processes
  • How imprecise, ambiguous information can stall process improvement
  • Measure and analyze data to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Leverage “Voice Of Customer” into any initiative
  • Tools: Process Observation Sheet, Run Charts, Histogram, VSM deep dive, future state planning, piloting changes

Instructors

Antonio "Tony" Nava serves as a Programs Director for the Office of Operational Strategic Initiatives. He has trained over 2000 staff with the campus Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification at UCSD, as well as 700 staff in process mapping as the administrator for Promapp. He was awarded the 2021 UC San Diego Exemplary Staff Employee of the Year. Tony regularly facilitates cross-departmental and cross-institutional projects, Prosci Change Management, and LSS methodologies to support change initiatives, and delivers campus-wide efforts to support lean initiatives and business best practices. After the development of an introductory AI Module available for all UCSD staff, his current focus is on blending LSS and AI to ensure teams reach optimal benefits from each tool set. 

Tony earned his Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts from UC San Diego and has completed Master's coursework in organizational management from Ashford University. Tony earned his Lean Six Sigma Black Belt from UC San Diego Extension. Tony spends his time outside of work supporting scouting organizations, cycling, and often donates his ponytail to Locks of Love, a 501(c)(3) that supports a sense of self and normalcy in children suffering from hair loss.


Jessica Pham

Jessica is a Strategic Initiatives Analyst who currently leads the campus Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt program.

Before joining OSI, Jessica worked across a multitude of academic departments and divisions at UC San Diego, where she led initiatives to optimize resource utilization, improve operational processes, and enhance both the student experience and campus engagement.

Jessica holds a Master of Public Administration from San Diego State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from UC San Diego. 

In her free time, Jessica enjoys attending local concerts, discovering new restaurants to share with friends, and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Balboa Park.
