Mindfulness for Mental Efficiency: Improve Wellbeing, Resilience, and Performance at Work
Christy Cassisa, Associate Director of Operations & Community Partnerships, UC San Diego Health
+ more
Stress and distraction are widely acknowledged as major drains on the productivity and health of organizations of all kinds. Our tech-driven culture and always-on-call expectations increase pressure on employees to produce more, faster, and with fewer resources. In this world, mindfulness can help us stay on task, do our best work, and thrive.
Mindfulness is a way of paying attention on purpose to the present moment. By being present, focused, and aware, we can stay calm in a crisis, be resilient in the face of challenge and change, make intentional decisions, and connect with people in a clear and compassionate way. Scientific research is proving what millions have learned already, that the ability to pay attention can help us be healthier, be more focused, and make better decisions. Join the UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness to explore what mindfulness is, why we need it now more than ever, and how it can help you both at work and at home.

Implementing a Daily Engagement System (DES) in the Healthcare Setting
Mike Spencer,Transformational Healthcare Lead, UC San Diego Health; Melinda Hudson, Transformational Healthcare Coach, UC San Diego Health
+ more
An effective Daily Engagement System (DES) accomplishes three goals: alignment, improvement, and readiness (acronym: AIR). DES empowers people at all levels not only to do their work (Readiness), but to do the right work (Alignment), and to continuously improve the work (Improvement). For the UC San Diego Health System, the dual aims of DES are first, to engage everyone in assuring that we are ready every day to deliver outstanding patient care, and also to continuously improve our processes, to achieve our longer term goals. The most tangible aspect of DES is tiered huddles, which promotes bi-directional communication between those serving our patients directly and organizational leaders, allows problems to be solved at the appropriate level, and provides a clear process for escalating operational needs. UC San Diego Health has begun its adoption of these previously mentioned DES components, and would like to share the successes/lessons learned from the implementation process.
Process, Measures & Analysis
It is tempting to view Enterprise Systems Renewal (ESR) and its related activities as merely about new applications to help you work more efficiently and effectively. This is certainly true, but more fundamentally, ESR is about reshaping the way UC San Diego does business, and this represents potentially radical change across the organization. One of the most far reaching changes will be in how individuals and units access and use data, which means that helping customers manage change involves customers helping us understand what drives their data needs now and in the future. In this talk, we'll discuss efforts associated with the identification and inventory of the myriad ways in which campus personnel currently use institutional data, and how those data will be available to customers in the future.
