Alysson Satterlund

With 24 years’ of progressive student affairs leadership experience, Alysson Satterlund joined UC San Diego on November 1, 2018 as the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (VCSA). Dr. Satterlund serves as the chief student affairs officer, providing executive-level leadership and vision for a comprehensive range of initiatives, services and policies to ensure a student-centered experience at UC San Diego. A first-generation college graduate, Satterlund is deeply committed to, and has led, strategic campus-wide initiatives related to diversity and inclusion, community engagement, student well-being and student success.

Prior to coming to UC San Diego, she served as the inaugural Associate Vice President and Dean of Students at California State University (CSU) San Bernardino, one of the most diverse four-year universities in California. At CSU San Bernardino, she provided leadership in the administration of a range of policies and services across the two campuses--San Bernardino and Palm Desert--including the development of an award-winning summer bridge program.

As an undergrad at CSU Chico, Dr. Satterlund worked as a cashier and custodian to help finance her education and got involved in a community service-learning program, which sparked her passion for the field. While earning a Master of Arts in Information & Communication Studies at CSU Chico, she continued to work in student affairs at the university. Her scholarship eventually brought her to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she earned a doctorate in Communication Studies, while simultaneously working in student services at Duke University. In addition, Dr. Satterlund has held leadership positions at Dartmouth College, CSU, Sacramento and City College of San Francisco.
