This class covers the basics of Lean Six Sigma. You’ll learn LSS terminology and foundational concepts to dip your toes into continuous improvement initiatives. We will showcase the power of process improvement through examples of projects completed across campus. 

One promise of a high-functioning management system is to engage the hearts and minds of all staff. Why is this essential? How do we go about aligning 10,000 people spread across many locations and disciplines, with clinical and non-clinical roles, working different shifts, with sometimes conflicting priorities? A Daily Engagement System (DES) is part of the answer. Hear about UC San Diego Health's progress in our second year of DES deployment.

With Enterprise Systems Renewal (ESR) changing how we work at UC San Diego, most of us realize change when a new ESR service is implemented. However, the planning and management of the change started from the beginning – of ESR and from the beginning of each ESR project.

For this reason, ESR created a guiding program called Strategic Organizational Change Management (SOCM) focused on the people side of change. SOCM provides ESR projects with a community of organizational change practitioners and a structured approach to manage change so that individuals, and ultimately organizationally, we adopt change.

Come learn about the ESR SOCM and why a structured approach to managing change is needed and how you apply organizational change management matters! We’ll share best practice, lessons learned and provide you with tools to manage change in your organization.

How did Toyota create a culture of respect for people and continuous improvement?

You might be surprised to learn that what we call “Lean” here in the U.S. is not the common practice for companies across Japan. After living in Japan for 18 months and now returning multiple times a year to lead executive Japan study trips for lean practitioners, I have discovered the nuances of Japanese culture that both support and inhibit Lean and the Toyota Production System.

In this session, you will discover some previously unknown stories about the history of Toyota’s development of the Toyota Way culture. We’ll explore how Toyota developed something special to create its culture of respect for people and continuous improvement through examples from Japan and Toyota, as other examples from Japanese companies who are practicing their versions of Lean and continuous improvement.

All participants will receive an advance chapter of the forthcoming book (to be released in June 2020) by Katie Anderson and Isao Yoshino about Yoshino’s reflections on over 40 years of working at Toyota in Japan and the United States.

Learn how lean thinking can help your team proactively work together to solve problems on a daily basis, reduce the amount of time managers spend fire-fighting, and improve engagement. You will receive an overview of key lean principles and how leaders can apply these principles in their leadership and management styles to create a culture shift towards collaboration and trust. Walk away with tactics for engaging teams in daily improvement.

We encounter problems daily as we run the operations that consume much of our time and do not allow us to focus on other priorities that we need to work on or even the gains we have made in recent improvement activities. These problems, or as we call them, "opportunities," often take a tremendous amount of work to tackle because we are either not the problem owner or have little knowledge or expertise of how or why it came into existence. We often feel like we can't get a break and fall into the role of firefighter dealing with problems that are perhaps not being solved at the appropriate level and often flare back up when we move on to the next issue that demands our attention. This talk will provide some insights on how some organizations are not focusing on solving problems of others but are instead investing in the development of employees (our most valuable assets) to become effective problem solvers.

Stress and distraction are widely acknowledged as major drains on the productivity and health of organizations of all kinds. Our tech-driven culture and always-on-call expectations increase pressure on employees to produce more, faster, and with fewer resources. In this world, mindfulness can help us stay on task, do our best work, and thrive.

Mindfulness is a way of paying attention on purpose to the present moment. By being present, focused, and aware, we can stay calm in a crisis, be resilient in the face of challenge and change, make intentional decisions, and connect with people in a clear and compassionate way. Scientific research is proving what millions have learned already, that the ability to pay attention can help us be healthier, be more focused, and make better decisions. At the Postal Service, continuous improvement is used to solve problems large and small to simplify processes, reduce costs, make employees’ jobs easier and improve our customer’s experience.

This session will present the Postal Service’s Lean journey.

The purpose of the training is to manage multiple process improvement efforts, while recognizing change fatigue that contributes to decreased improvement. Attendees will gain personal and professional skills that will offer them increased opportunities to enjoy what they do and do it efficiently while providing stellar service and support for faculty, staff, and students. The highly interactive training is broken into two parts: managing process improvement opportunities and learning how to deal with fatigue during continuous improvement. Participants will gain a better understanding of competing priorities, increase time management skills, and identify change fatigue and how to deal with it.

Final and complete solutions are always the goal, but when does perfect become the enemy of the good? The Library and Student Financial Solutions are trying a few different things to try and make student lives easier by publishing how busy the respective locations are, how many computers are available, and an early look at partial payments.

UC San Diego Health Tableau rollout success is due to leveraging a federated model that includes training, community, and governance. Join us to understand the structure that has enabled the organization within two years to have >100 developers, 900 end users and up to 10,000 views per month.

At this time of deep transformation across UC San Diego, the need to grow our change resilience capacity is both challenging and urgent. Lean Six Sigma and process improvement methodologies have been essential in higher education institutions to simplify and streamline administrative and academic processes, thereby becoming faster, better and more cost-effective in delivering top-performing students. UCSD has shown dramatic growth in Lean Six Sigma practitioners over the last few years and other California colleges and universities are launching or expanding programs of their own, even integrating Lean Six Sigma into their curricula. In general, higher education institutions have found tremendous value in these techniques because of the emphasis on problem-solving, root cause analysis and continuous improvement.

Join us for an interactive panel discussion with higher education leaders across a variety of colleges and universities who have taken proactive steps to promote Lean Six Sigma techniques to their staff, faculty, and students. The audience will learn about the current LSS and process improvement programs at each institution and the future of these initiatives at each campus and in their wider communities.

Lean bench is UC San Diego’s go-team for process improvement, a select set of campus expert practitioners of Lean Six Sigma methodology who engage and lead crucial efforts around process improvement, operational excellence, and business.

Since its inception in 2018, Lean Bench has demonstrated the power of incremental improvements partnering across business areas like Research Administration, Finance, Student Experience, Academic Personnel, and campus One ID card.

This session showcases the incremental benefits and value of Lean Bench’s process improvement efforts.
